1) Survey a key sampling of your end users to see what would need to be changed for them to use the company intranet more.

2) Consider partnering with local restaurants, shops, etc. to offer discounts on your company intranet. If your staff frequently patronizes local merchants, they would need to visit the intranet to benefit and/or learn about any discounts.

3) Do you have an online timesheet system? If you integrated that system into the company intranet, staff members would have to go into it to fill out and submit their timesheets.

Yes. Of Course. Yes!!!

First, link building is aimed at improving Pagerank and ranking, as this is defined by the initial Google algorithm. Search engine results pages however do not show results based just on Pagerank, but on Relevancy. Naturally, high pagerank however does not imply a high degree of relevancy but it certainly helps to a certain degree.

Second, there are regulated business sectors for example books, shoes, school supplies and auto industries where directly/indirectly things such as Adwords/PayPerClick, PR, Link Building, etc are not allowed. So, sometimes lack of link building is actually part of the requirements in a way. But that does not mean that a website cannot do well without link building. On the contrary…

A relevant example which you might find useful is one of generic keyword, which you can find very easily if you search for http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=home where no link building has taken place, yet the website is performing really well and has produced great results.

Having said that though, SEO without link building means that you are most likely going deeper into coding, design, application performance and other aspects of an online presence which means that SEO begins to come closer to the Technical side of a site and from the Marketing side.

The ranking factor of Google Product Search is Relevancy where it includes quality and accuracy of data feeds with the search term.

The more relevant product attributes we give, the more are the chances of getting visibility in Google product search result when a user types similar or relevant attributes. Google base allows us to insert more product attributes through customized attributes feature.

Google has some predefined product attributes that we might need like size, format, color, height, weight but Google has an option wherein we can use our own unlimited custom attributes. See below some of the custom attributes:

model
temperature
delivery
age
discount/rebate/coupon
user’s guide
rating

The more relevant product information we give, the more quality traffic we will get…

Apart from Relevancy, Google helps online shoppers to list/rank the merchant list based up on other 3 things.

1. Seller Rating – The store will rank top if it has 5 Star or a higher score than other participants. (Higher to lower)

Increasing the seller rating is purely depends on the quality of customer service we provide. The seller ratings are calculated not just by how many votes received, but also depends on the number of quality stars we get. For instance, if 5 users would have rated seller A with 1 star and 3 users would have rated seller B with 5 stars, Seller B is more likely to get ranked higher. Therefore, it’s not quantity but quality ratings that fetch higher ranking.

2. Tax and Shipping – Your Store will rank top based on the tax and shipping data (Higher to Lower)

Since more number of shoppers have asked for tax and shipping options on Google product search, Google has recently introduced this feature. Though not mandatory, providing tax and shipping might get you more visibility.

3. Price – If the product price is lower than the competitors, then the site will rank top. (Lower to Higher)

Quote the perfect price. (Perfect price doesn’t mean the lowest price). It’s the right price which will get you more per unit sales as well as good margins.

There could also be a case where merchants clash with each other on the same price/rating/tax and shipping. Under this scenario, Google might rank the most relevant item for a particular search term higher than the rest, or it could be using some other factor, which is beyond our comprehension.

4. Fresh Data – This is actually a ranking factor which Google recommend to get higher rankings. Fresh data, as in updating the feed as often as possible or setting the scheduler to crawl the feed frequently, helps both the rankings and the accuracy of data. Since Google doesn’t crawl the pages, it’s important to ensure that the feed is up to date with the latest descriptions, prices and names.

Following minimum things to do in order to improve the quality of data feeds. We should also make sure that we adhere to Google base program policy and its guidelines.

Title: Making sure that the product title describes the product. Keep it precise, short and simple. Google base shorten product titles to up to 70 characters limit, so avoid overdoing the titles by stuffing keywords.

Description: Product description should be clear and comprehensive. A good idea would be to tell the benefits of the product by including the most important and catchy attributes of the product like free shipping, sale, discounts, etc…

Link: Making sure the link provided on Google’s product page is directed to the correct landing page on the website. When users are directed to some other product page, they are most likely to leave the website rather than take the pain to search the website for the correct product.

Price: This is a mandatory field in Google base data feeds. The price that you include in the Google base feed must be same the price on the landing page.

Product ID: This is the product’s internal Identification code. Making sure that we maintain the same Id when we re-submit our product or send a new data feed.

MPN/UPC: Most ready to buy shoppers will search for the product by entering MPN/UPC number along with some product attribute. So including an MPN/UPC will help the online retailer to make his products more visible to online shoppers.

Product Image: Including an image can greatly increase the chances of a user clicking on the item in the search results. When adding images to the feed, make sure that we include only high quality images that accurately represent the product as it is displayed on the item page. Do not include logo or generic images.

Feed Format: Google allows you to upload feeds in multiple ways. If you have few items, you can individually upload them using a web form. Alternatively you can also upload using single tab-delimited text or XML file. To learn more about data feeds read, “How to post an item to Google Product Search? ”

Set your target country: Specify the location where we’d like the items to be displayed in the search results. This helps us to focus on the target audience, as it screens us from appearing in search results where we don’t intend to sell. This will greatly reduce the bounce rates of the site.
